Urine white blood cells (WBCs) measure the presence of immune cells in urine to help detect infection or inflammation in the urinary tract.
The urine WBC test evaluates the number of white blood cells present in a urine sample, typically as part of a urinalysis. White blood cells are part of the immune system and respond to infection or inflammation.
Their presence in urine (a condition known as pyuria) often indicates a urinary tract infection (UTI), but may also be associated with kidney disease, inflammation, or contamination of the sample. Results are usually reported as the number of WBCs per high-power field (HPF) under a microscope.
