Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) is a protein produced by prostate gland cells. In the bloodstream, PSA exists in two main forms: bound (attached to proteins) and free (unbound). The total PSA test measures both forms combined, while the free PSA test measures only the unbound fraction.
The free PSA percentage (% free PSA) is calculated to improve the interpretation of total PSA levels, particularly in distinguishing between benign prostate conditions and prostate cancer.
