HDL Large refers to the larger, more protective subfraction of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) particles involved in cholesterol transport.
HDL Large represents a subclass of high-density lipoprotein particles that are bigger and less dense than smaller HDL particles. These large HDL particles play a key role in reverse cholesterol transport, a process in which excess cholesterol is removed from peripheral tissues and transported back to the liver for elimination.
HDL Large is considered particularly protective against cardiovascular disease because it is more efficient at clearing cholesterol and may have stronger anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Measurement of HDL subfractions, including HDL Large, provides a more detailed assessment of lipid metabolism beyond total HDL cholesterol.
